Connect algebra to the real world with the Functions in Action Project! This project-based learning activity helps students explore real-life applications of functions through FOUR engaging parts. Students will research and collect data, create graphs in Desmos, write equations to model relationships, and analyze how functions appear in everyday situations. With clear step-by-step guidance, this project helps students see that functions are everywhere!
REAL-LIFE TOPICS:
• Vending Machine (buttons & items)
• Stock Trends (date & price)
• Hourly Wages (hours & earnings)
• Fast Food Restaurant (time & number of customers): Piecewise Functions – perfect for advanced students or enrichment
OBJECTIVE:
Analyze and model real-world scenarios using a variety of functions. Students will be able to:
- Determine independent and dependent variables in a real-world context.
- Understand and apply the concepts of input and output.
- Identify and describe functions using tables and ordered pairs.
- Analyze functions using domain and range.
- Identify slope, zeros, minimums, maximums of a function.
- Write and evaluate a linear function.
- Communicate mathematical ideas clearly through written and visual representations.
- Enrichment: Collect data and model trends using piecewise functions (linear functions only).

Real World Math Projects
I am always trying to create or find projects where each students' project will be different than every other students in the class because it is more authentic this way. And of course, I want it to be applicable in the real world! This is not always easy to make because if every student’s project is different, or even has an unlimited number of solutions, checking each one is extremely difficult and time-consuming for the teacher. Well, guess what?!...these projects are authentic.
